Episode 5: The Jacksonville Chiropractor Who Trained with an Olympic Bobsledder to Teach Speed

Season 1

About This Episode

Dr. Cody Muren’s journey from college baseball player to chiropractor began with his own injuries on the field. After earning his doctorate from Palmer College of Chiropractic in 2017 and practicing as an associate for five years, he launched Full Swing Healthcare in March 2023. His Jacksonville practice combines traditional chiropractic care with cutting-edge treatments like stem wave therapy, acupuncture, and performance training informed by his work with a former US Olympic bobsledder.

In this episode, we talk with Dr. Cody Muren, DC, TPI Certified, Owner of Full Swing Healthcare - Injury & Sports Care Jacksonville about how Cory got started, what drives the business, and what sets Full Swing Healthcare - Injury & Sports Care Jacksonville apart.

Key Takeaways

  • Athlete-first mindset: Dr. Muren’s background as a college baseball player gives him firsthand understanding of athletes’ needs and the urgency to return to competition without compromising performance
  • Comprehensive treatment toolkit: Beyond traditional chiropractic adjustments, the practice offers massage therapy, acupuncture, dry needling, myofascial cupping and scraping, and advanced stem wave therapy—all under one roof
  • Performance enhancement focus:* Unlike practices that only treat injuries, Full Swing actively works with athletes (baseball players, golfers, soccer players) to optimize their performance, increase range of motion, and improve mechanics
  • Speed and sprint expertise:* Dr. Muren’s specialized training with a former US Olympic bobsledder gives him unique insight into sprint mechanics and muscle activation that most chiropractors don’t have
  • Whole-body analysis: Rather than just treating the area of pain, Dr. Muren always examines above and below the problem area (for example, checking hips, knees, and low back for someone with hip mobility issues) to address root causes

Notable Quotes

“I will see people who have gone through the gambit of injections and ortho visits and physical therapy and within a couple visits they’re at a level that they haven’t been in years and they’re just like ’I wish I had done this first.”

Okay, hey everyone, this is Dave from a greater town and as you probably know by now we

0:07

Are focusing this entire series is about local businesses where we speak with the owners and sort of get their story

0:15

You know what we like to say we're doing here is taking back Main Street. So with that said

0:22

today we have Cody Murin from full swing health and

0:26

And

0:27

Let's just get started with the basics Cody what where you from?

0:33

Jacksonville, Florida Jacksonville, Florida. Okay, and your practice is in Jacksonville, right? Yes. Yeah, okay

0:40

All right. So what we like to do is sort of go chronologically right from like the very beginning, you know, you're from Jacksonville, Florida

0:50

Where did you go to school did you go to school for the practice that you're doing now?

0:55

Yeah, so I I played college baseball in Georgia

1:00

So I went to LaGrange College where I studied biology and then graduated from there and went to

1:08

Palmer College of chiropractic in Port Orange, Florida

1:10

So just out the Daytona is where I studied to get my doctorate in chiropractic

1:16

Okay. All right. So you were you were an athlete you basically said right? Yes. Okay. What was that like?

1:23

It's good. It was good. Um, definitely what led me towards my career. I suffered different various injuries and

1:31

Loved playing baseball. So nothing kept me off the field too long. Yeah. Yeah

1:36

Yeah, well, I'm I've got a bunch of questions for you regarding injuries and athletics and performance a lot

1:43

But we'll get to that in a minute

1:45

So alright, so when is when did you finish the school?

1:50

That's finished getting my doctorate and the end of 2017 and was licensed at the very beginning of 2018

1:59

Okay. All right. So alright that brings us to roughly, you know 2018

2:04

Did you start the perhaps full swing right away or did you?

2:08

No, I actually I practiced as an associate for roughly five years

2:14

Under another chiropractor. So I learned from an experienced chiropractor in that fashion and then went off and brand-new

2:19

Shelf into making my own practice. Oh, wow. Okay

2:23

All right. So and when was that when did full swing start full swing started in it was March 1st of 2023

2:32

2023 okay. So is it that's roughly end of pandemic

2:37

Yeah, yeah, so it was kind of a crazy time but

2:41

Yeah

2:44

Okay

2:45

Alright, so now you're roughly

2:48

Three to four years in yeah, and how's it going good very good

2:53

Yeah growing and and tons of services and bringing on new people. Okay, so I want to

3:01

Well, let's do that first. So so just give a high level of the services

3:07

So our primary service is chiropractic and that's what our office is

3:12

But alongside that not only do we do chiropractic services we also offer massage therapy

3:20

acupuncture dry needling and

3:23

Cupping and scraping so those are tools to help loosen up the fascial adhesions

3:28

Okay

3:29

It's funny

3:31

my one of my boys

3:34

Has become obsessed with the fascia. Yeah, I didn't know that was a thing. Okay

3:41

And he's like trying to activate it and like, you know, we could talk for hours about this. I'm sure you you know

3:50

Anyway, so

3:51

Alright, so acupuncture. So, I mean I understand the services the names, but you know as the average consumer

3:57

I don't really know what that means. I just know acupuncture as a word. What is it used for?

4:03

What what would I how would that help me? Right? So

4:08

Everybody always associates acupuncture immediately with the needles, right? That is the

4:13

Essentially, that's the key to the ignition what we're looking for with acupuncture is there's these

4:20

Essentially these roadmaps along the body in

4:23

ancient Chinese medicine that they figured out are either areas of

4:28

too much energy not enough or

4:32

a lot of stagnant just changes so

4:35

Essentially what we do is we use the needles to hit certain spots along the body that I describe as

4:41

You're dealing with traffic on the road and you've got a lot of detours

4:46

We're clearing those detours so the traffic can flow normally and that comes from our from our energy. Wow

4:52

It's fascinating actually. Yeah, okay

4:56

So we can treat a various amount of pain issues as well as stress anxiety

5:02

Even things like smoking addictions and things like that as well. Wow, really? Yeah, the acupuncture Wow

5:09

Yes. Yeah. Wow, that's incredible. I never would have no guessed, you know that

5:16

Okay, and then you said

5:18

Sorry, I'm gonna get the terminology wrong cup

5:22

Puppet. Yeah. Yeah, what's that? Yeah, so cupping is along the lines of the myofascial stuff

5:28

So cupping is along the lines of the myofascial stuff

5:31

So myo meaning muscle fascia meaning the essentially the webbing between the skin and the muscle that helps those areas glide

5:39

So what we do with cups is we will typically hit

5:43

threefold different ways so we will put the cups on and

5:47

typically we're hitting the musculature the areas of pain or restriction and

5:52

We can either have the patient laying with those on just completely static

5:58

We have some where we'll actually take them through movements with the cups on to help increase the range of motion

6:03

And then we have glided cupping where we will actually move the cups around with that suction already connected to help

6:11

Break up areas in a more cohesive manner. Mm-hmm. Okay, so it sounds like a

6:17

I

6:20

Don't know what the right word maybe more sophisticated version of massaging

6:24

Yes

6:25

Yeah

6:25

A lot of times I'll tell people when we put them on it kind of feels like pushing on that knot or that trigger point

6:32

And it helps relieve that tension there. Yeah. Yeah. Wow

6:36

Wow, that's fascinating. I'm already learning a lot. Okay

6:42

so, okay and

6:44

Now everything or this group of services that you just described is

6:49

Is not or you tell me if I'm wrong. It sounds like it's not exactly

6:54

Chiropractic that like that chiropractic is it is a separate thing. Is that right? Right?

7:00

They're kind of like a sidekick to chiropractic, right? So

7:04

when we bring somebody in they will typically be analyzed for

7:10

muscle restrictions joint restrictions and

7:14

nerve either over activity or inactivity

7:17

So based off of what we find with that patient will decide whether we're going to be doing

7:23

chiropractic which is more joint manipulation

7:26

increasing range of motion in the joints where we're finding areas that are kind of stuck not moving as well or

7:33

If we're gonna do more of the muscle work things like cupping dry needling and acupuncture or a combination of all

7:40

Yeah, okay. All right

7:43

Right. So you got a bunch of different tools in the you know toolbox that you know, it's to solve the problem, right? Okay

7:49

All right. All right. So now I'm gonna dive into

7:54

I'm gonna be selfish. Okay

7:56

this is I have twin boys they are

8:03

Obsessed is a light word when it comes to soccer, right?

8:07

They are waking up before school a couple hours 6 a.m. Before school to train every morning

8:14

You know, they go to they go to a soccer academy where they play for four hours every day

8:18

And then they go to their club practice after

8:22

They're done with school, right?

8:24

crazy dedicated whatever right so

8:28

They one of them has

8:31

developed some knee pain or actually both knees, right and

8:35

We went to a physical therapist yesterday

8:38

so the first thing I want to try to understand is what is the difference between physical therapy and

8:44

chiropractic work

8:46

so we have a lot of the same philosophies and values, but the big difference between chiropractic and

8:54

physical therapy is with chiropractic we are looking to

8:59

immediately very efficiently and quickly

9:02

Increase someone's range of motion in their joints so they can be dealing with those restrictions where

9:08

They're just not as flexible as they need to be. They're not able to fully

9:14

Move a very specific part of their body

9:16

Let's say neck or shoulder something like that and we restore that full range of motion

9:22

Whereas physical therapy is more focused on

9:25

Strengthening surrounding musculature

9:28

adapting that through more of a muscle recovery that way a rehabilitation technique and

9:35

Those are a lot of things that we do as well

9:37

So we will help increase that range of motion and then provide exercises to restore that range of motion and keep it

9:44

Yeah, okay. All right. So so following this thread, right?

9:48

Like I said, we went to a PT yesterday and we learned that

9:52

Matthew is his name

9:54

Matthew's

9:56

Hip

9:58

Hip flexibility is

10:01

Not terrible, but not where it should be which is, you know incredibly

10:08

Important for a soccer player

10:11

So, you know the PT even a bunch of exercises and that's great and he's doing them already

10:18

But it sounds like your approach to it would be different than what you know

10:24

PT would do so tell me a little bit about what you would suggest for somebody like that. That's trying to I

10:29

Guess open up their hips for lack of a better or less technical word, you know

10:34

so

10:35

In our office we make sure to always educate on the musculature involved a lot of times people will come in with a hip mobility

10:43

Issue or a low back issue and both those things go very hand-in-hand

10:47

So somebody like Matthew I would analyze for not only the hips but the knees low back

10:54

We're always looking above and below those areas as well and making sure we're restoring as much motion as we can in both those areas

11:01

So with somebody like Matthew, I would most likely do things to decompress open up hip mobility

11:07

through a hip

11:09

Manipulation that we do as well as restoring more motion in the pelvis

11:14

In that low back to help those SI joints of the pelvis move more properly and that

11:21

Attaches into a lot of spots in the hip

11:25

Okay, so am I right in saying that

11:30

You don't need to have had a

11:34

I'll use the word traumatic event or accident or injury like, you know serious injury to benefit from

11:42

A chiropractic

11:45

From you right from your practices a player like Matthew who is not really injured per se

11:50

Could benefit from what you're doing

11:53

We see we see tons of different athletes strictly for performance. So

11:59

For instance, we'll see baseball players golfers who may have like they feel like they're just not getting through their swing

12:06

As well as they should so we'll work on whether that's a shoulder issue a hip issue low back

12:13

And make sure we're just taking

12:16

Who they are and making them the optimal version of themselves, right? Right? Yeah. Yeah, you know, I'm

12:25

I'm learning a lot about this because of through the boys

12:30

And it's really fascinating stuff I kind of wish we knew this earlier and

12:35

You know

12:37

I guess the sad part is we really didn't have a reason to know until like we had a thing a reason to go to a

12:45

PT or an author or whatever and that kind of like started the learning process. We started, you know trying to

12:52

Yeah, I just wish more people knew about it because it made a giant difference, you know when we went to these places and I

12:58

Didn't even really know that performance purely performance enhancement was a was a thing

13:04

Right just seemed to me like it was about recovery from an event, right?

13:10

So yeah, that's great

13:13

Alright, so we've covered the chiropractic part. You talked about the other sort of supplementary or you know

13:19

Supplementary services. Is there anything else you would like people to know about how the practice works or just you know, the chiropractic in general?

13:28

Yeah, so

13:29

Unfortunately about two years ago another thing that we added was our our stem wave device or shockwave therapy

13:35

Mm-hmm. So that has really been a game-changer for the office because it works on a cellular level that we can't quite

13:43

Get to without this type of technology and it's able to penetrate

13:49

deeply into areas of

13:52

Really significant injuries where people are able to avoid surgery and drugs and it's not invasive and they can continue going

13:59

About their normal life without any downtime

14:02

Wow

14:04

Okay, I'm gonna just because you know again sports thing, you know

14:11

Living in that world now. I'm sort of relating stuff to that right?

14:15

another thing I learned

14:17

in terms of sprinting right and running mechanics and all that kind of stuff is you know that your hips are

14:24

Incredibly important the range of motion and how your legs stride and hit the floor and all that kind of stuff

14:30

is incredibly important, so

14:32

How how would any of the services you provide?

14:37

help with those motions

14:39

yeah, I actually like that you mentioned that because I I worked personally with a

14:45

former bobsledder for the US Olympic team who

14:50

Trained me on essentially how to be fast

14:53

There's a lot of ways that you know people think you can't teach speed you can very well teach speed and

15:00

From that knowledge that I gained from somebody who is incredibly fast

15:04

I learned much more in depth about what muscles are firing through certain parts of a sprint

15:11

So if that were something that somebody wanted to increase

15:16

Performance-based we look at where they may be having trouble

15:19

We may analyze how they sprint what it looks like when they sprint and that lets me know

15:25

Okay, this muscle isn't activating as well

15:28

Or it seems like they're they're hanging on on one side more than the other kind of asymmetrical with their sprint techniques

15:36

So we would look at those open those things up and get those moving properly. Yeah, right. Yeah

15:42

It's fascinating. It really is there's so much out there to know which is why we do these videos

15:47

You know, I mean part of it is to just

15:50

Hear about you and the business and you know get the word out about the great work you're doing

15:56

But it's also to help educate consumers, you know, like like like me right now. I didn't really know this stuff until

16:05

Recently, so I'm really actually glad that we're we're here talking about it. Yeah, that's all right. Yeah, okay

16:12

So is there anything else that you would like people to know?

16:17

We

16:19

Amongst other things that we take care of in the office. We see people after

16:25

auto-accident injuries

16:26

Those things are entirely more common than I thought

16:31

also when I first started eight years ago, I didn't really understand how detrimental those things are how

16:39

chronic they can become and

16:42

So we work very quickly after these accidents to try and not let these injuries become chronic so things like whiplash

16:52

Discerniations we make sure we're getting that information and treating those patients. Yeah

16:58

Yeah, you know, I'm glad you brought it up that way

17:02

And again, I'll use my boys as an example

17:06

So Luke the other twin had some neck pain and

17:12

You know, we went to see someone and they told us that this muscle is

17:17

Overpowering this muscle and it's causing his head to go forward, right?

17:21

And that's causing stress on the back or on the back muscles and it was giving them neck pain, right?

17:25

So they told us how to fix it and he fixed it and it worked. I was

17:30

Blown away

17:32

I mean, maybe it sounds really simple and silly

17:34

But you know again, if you're like the average consumer you think oh, you know

17:38

I'm gonna have to suffer with neck pain for the rest of my life

17:40

But it's not true. Like, you know you as a professional know these things that

17:46

Me as a consumer, you know, dummy basically

17:51

Don't know so I'm saying this now because through my experience I now

17:56

Much more frequently than I used to be

18:00

Much more frequently go to services like yours and PTs

18:06

And I just kind of want everybody to hear me say this so that

18:10

They'll do the same because it is a hundred percent worth it. It really makes a difference

18:15

And you know, I'm sure you see these cases all the time. I mean, that's the point of what you do

18:22

So we'll see a lot of times

18:25

You know people will have this dark umbrella thinking that chiropractic is scary and dangerous and very often

18:32

It is the opposite. So we are I would say the most

18:38

The least invasive of any of those services. So our our techniques are gentle. They're safe and

18:46

I will see people who have gone through the gambit of

18:50

injections and

18:52

ortho visits and physical therapy and

18:55

Within a couple visits there at a level that they haven't been in in years and they're just like I wish I had done this

19:01

first so

19:03

I was just gonna say I

19:06

Happen to work in

19:08

Health care so I have some

19:11

Knowledge of sort of the way, you know a patient moves around right with diagnosis and whatever and I was just gonna say that

19:19

it's probably the smartest thing to do to start with

19:25

Chiropractic first and move up the chain, right?

19:30

What everybody does which is go to the ortho first and move down the chain, right?

19:37

Would you would you agree with that? Yeah, I mean a lot of times

19:42

When you go that route

19:44

it's

19:45

It is kind of I don't want to call it backwards

19:48

But it is kind of like you're jumping the gun a lot of times these you know orthos they do surgery and

19:55

Our goal is to avoid that and a lot of times these people can avoid surgery and the answer is very simple

20:02

Yeah, right, right

20:04

Yeah, and you know just for anybody that's listening. I'm gonna repeat myself because I just feel like this is

20:10

It was such a learning moment for me

20:13

I'm gonna

20:15

Back up what you just said

20:17

Sometimes it's so simple

20:19

With the next thing with Luke and another sort of similar thing with my wife

20:24

The solution was so simple and we spent all this time and effort going down kind of the wrong route

20:31

and ended up in

20:34

chiropractic and it worked and I was

20:37

Surprised to be frank not because I had like that dark umbrella thing going on

20:42

but just because I you know, I just didn't know and we tried it and it worked and

20:48

I'm happy

20:50

It's fantastic those are the you know, those patients that come in with not a lot of knowledge on

20:55

What we do and we help them that quickly and they see how comfortable everything is is very cool

21:02

Right. Okay. All right

21:05

Well, you know, that's probably all the questions I have

21:10

I'm happy to keep going if you've got more things you want to cover. I

21:14

Think that's great. Yeah, that's been awesome. Okay. All right, cool

21:17

Well, you know we'll we'll put this on the channel and

21:21

Give anybody that's watching plenty of ways to reach out to you if they they want to so

21:26

With that said thanks for coming on and let me know if you've got any questions

21:31

Yeah, no, I appreciate very much. It was great talking with you. Yeah, you too. All right. Take care
